IOS 11: How to upgrade

Hello and Happy Wednesday,

Today we are going to discuss updating to IOS 11.  This is a fairly easy process, but there a couple of critical steps that need to be done at the beginning.  I was going to try and do a full review, but other websites have done this and I will link to those at the bottom of this page for easy access for you.  IOS 11 does bring many features out that I know I have been waiting for, so I believe it is a worthwhile update.  Still, it was just released to the public yesterday and you should only upgrade if you are comfortable with possibly dealing with a few issues that Apple may need to address.

Warning before begining this is a major release and not all apps may be compatible with this new version of IOS.  You will want to check this before upgrading.  Select this link to check your apps

Before starting make sure your phone is fully charged.  Its not a big deal for these instructions, but if you choose to do the update on your phone itself then it is very important.  If you phone battery dies while doing this update you could lose your data or your phone could become unusable.

Step one is to determine if you IOS device is compatible with IOS 11.  If go here IOS compatible devices you can verify that your device is compatible.

Next, do a backup of your phone to your computer.  Plug your phone in and Itunes should launch.  Depending on your backup settings you may need to do a manual backup, or the device will automatically start backing up as mine did.

Once the backup is finished you should be prompted to download the latest version of IOS software available.  If not you can click the look for updates button.  This will begin the process of downloading the update.  Depending on you internet connection you the download could take time.

As you can tell, I used Itunes to do the update.  Mainly because it forces me to do a backup and I can continue to charge my phone using the lightning cord.  This also eliminates the chance of my phone battery completely draining during the update.

Once the update is completed you should then be able to click the install button.  Be patient and let the update go.  It can take a while as this is a major update.  Go get something to drink play with your kids and check on the update every few minutes.  Once you Iphone restarts the actuall install will begin on your phone. The phone may restart multiple times.  Your phone should then go to the unlock screen once completed.

Sign into your phone and boom.  You have successfully updated to IOS 11!  There are a lot of new features.  Take some time to get used to it.

Technology and Jobs

More people are becoming increasingly concerned about jobs.  As technology advances at the sonic speeds more entry-level jobs are going to be replaced.  This is a fact.  We can't slow it down if we want to see cheaper goods and services.  Companies also need to stay competitive.  Look at the recent deal between Microsoft and Walmart as both behemoths battle Amazon Another factor with this is growing wages.  As more states implement higher minimum wage laws companies are seeing more ROI on Kiosks and self-checkout registers.  Amazon has introduced a convenience store model that doesn't have cash registers at all.  You just download an app and you can go through the store and items get added or removed based on what you pick up. and put down.  More and more jobs are going to be automated.  Tesla is working on self driving tractor trailer trucks.   Amazing technology, but humans need to adapt.  Even in IT we...

New Focus!!

Posts were very few over the last two years. While quite a bit has happened it was hard to focus on much other than my full time job. I really have started to focus on security and helping you secure your home networks is what we are going to focus on in the coming months. There is a lot to talk about and tools you can use to ensure your data is safe. Items such as using a password manager and enabling Multi-Factor Authentication for your logins can ensure that your data is safe. Nothing is perfect, but taking steps can minimize your risk of having your information stolen. Not only will discuss these topics, but we will show you how to do some of them. Let me know some home network security topics you're interested in and we will add them to the list.
